There are three basic ringing strokes that every ringer should learn right from the start.
1. Scarf stroke - round, legato, fluid movement. This is where you start!
2. Ladder stroke - for 2 or more notes in a row. Ring repeated notes faster, while using less energy by putting multiple strikes into a single circle!
3. Accent stroke - flat and tense. This is probably your default stroke, unless you work to change it to something more musical. It has a place and purpose, but it should be an intentional effect, not your default movement.
